How Long Have Humans Been Around?

Is that humans been around 2 million years?

I. We have learned that the history of human evolution has these periods of time:

1. Australopithecus afarensis

We know that the remains of the oldest ancestor of man, homo sapiens, are those of Lucy, an Australopithecus afarensis 3.2 million years old found in 1974 in Ethiopia.

2. Homo habilis (skillful man)

It was discovered and named in the 1960s and is supposed to have populated Africa, 2m, He used his long legs to leave Africa, where it evolved 2 million years ago and was thus able to spread across Eurasia. He was probably also the first hominid to learn how to control fire and cook food. These innovations may have helped H. Erectus and their descendants to boost their diet’s nutritional consistency, paving the way for the development of larger brains that contributed to even more sophisticated behavior.

3. Homo neanderthalensis (Neanderthals)

The first primitive human to be discovered, almost 200 years ago, specifically in 1829. Researchers have found the bones of hundreds of Neanderthals in countries in Europe, Western Asia, and Central Asia.
Neardentals are considered cousins of our species, Homo sapiens. It is also known that this species made sophisticated stone and bone tools, self-medicated and made her own jewelry. Furthermore, recent articles assume that they practiced cannibalism.

4. The Denisovans

So little is known about this species that scientists are reluctant to call it with an official name (which would be homo denisova). Found in 2010, it is believed to have inhabited all of East Asia between about 200,000 and 50,000 years ago.

5. Homo floresiensis (the Indonesian hobbit)

According to the researchers, Homo floresiensis would have evolved before the first Homo habilis, separating from its evolutionary branch more than 1.75 million years ago. H. floresiensis lived thousands of miles east of Africa, lived just 50,000 years ago, and appears to have behaved like an advanced human in terms of his ability to control fire and cook food.

6. Homo naledi (star man)

Since its discovery in 2013, the hypotheses about when the Naledi was were not specific: between 2 million years old and 100,000 years old. Today, finally, there is a much more accurate estimate: a recent study claims that it is between 300,000 and 200,000 years old.

7. Homo sapiens (wise man, or modern human beings)

The current species of human beings was officially named in 1758. It first appeared in Africa some 200,000 years ago and began to spread from the continent at least 100,000 years ago, to spread throughout the rest of the world.

II. However, The human being could appear 2 million years earlier than previously thought

The appearance of the line that originated the human being could occur sooner than we expected. Specifically, two million years ahead of schedule, as shown by the latest analyzes of the fossils of our cousins, the non-hominid primates.
The Dryopithecus skull that has helped locate the species
We already have almost 5000 years of history and several tens of thousands of prehistory. But the doubts about our evolution are still there. We are able to observe when some of the first particles in the universe appeared; predict how the planet we live on was formed; and even estimate when life began on Earth. But when did what we understand to be the human being appear today? When did we begin to take the first steps that set us apart from our brothers, turning the first steps into what today has taken us to the technological and intellectual peak in which we find ourselves? The latest data shows that we appeared a little earlier than we expected – 10 million years ago.

For years, it has been estimated that the age of the appearance of man has been around 8 million years. Back then, what would be our lineage would have separated from other primates (non-hominid primates) such as the chimpanzee. Since then and until now, several have been the species that have emerged and disappeared on the path prior to Homo sapiens, a species to which we belong. A recent finding, however, could delay this date by about 2 million years. This is nothing but the skull of a gorilla, a non-hominid primate, that it could have. First the orangutans separated and then the gorillas appeared in the evolution of primates about 12 million years ago. Dryopithecus skull it could well have been that of a species of ancestor or independent of gorillas.
However, anatomical studies show that Dryopithecus was actually a small gorilla. This fact, related to the estimated times attributed to the appearance of the human being, places our origin 2 million years earlier. Why? Very simply, orangutans are the species that previously separated from the evolutionary line of the human being. Gorillas and Dryopithecus then come from orangutans. But if Dryopithecus is actually a gorilla, we can extrapolate and go back a time step in evolution and, then, the species is not only closer to humans but indicates that the appearance of the being Human was ahead of schedule.

Of course, anatomical study can be torturous and treacherous. It is very difficult to completely trust the physical characteristics of a fossil, so subject to interpretation. But luckily, today we have a huge number of molecular references. Indeed, there are biological and chemical clocks that support the hypothesis that locates our origin 2 million years ago. In fact, it was something that had long been suspected. Molecular clocks, usually genetic, are “comparisons” of molecules, roughly speaking, which tell us after many studies what time the species was. Over the years, our genetic material accumulates a series of mutations that pass from parents to children. The vast majority of these mutations have no effect, but serve as temporary indicators.
So far, the strongest evidence places both the molecular clocks and the oldest fossils of the human appearance, those of the Sahelanthropus, at 7 million years ago. However, there are evidences and molecular clocks that point to an ancestor of the human being that existed 13 million years ago. Of course, as we get closer to the root, where we diverge from our primate cousins, the evidence fades and becomes confused. Two species in development and separation go through a stage in which practically nothing is different from each other. Two million years is not a long time for two species to separate definitely from each other. To definitively place the appearance of the human being, two million years ago, we will have to find more evidence and fossils that fill the temporary gap that opens up, like an abyss, before what we know about our origin..
